The Top 10 Sci-Fi Films

After mulling over the latest Inception trailer, I began to wonder—what does it take to make a piece of science fiction “great”? Is it an almost inhuman ability to focus on details (and thus make the world in which any set of fictional characters exists entirely believable)? Should there be a focus on action, or are somber, more focused character studies the order of the day? Or is it a combination of all these things?
By its very definition, science fiction cannot be labeled as such if the plot falls apart when the technology/science in question is taken away. Based on this—and my own musings about which films have really left an impression on me over the years—I’ve put together a list of my top 10 favorite sci-fi flicks. We’ll count these down in a three-part series, so be sure to check back regularly for each subsequent installment.
