Purpose & Bio
About Chris Flowers and flowersflix.com:
flowersflix.com is a site that’s designed to provide you, the moviegoer, with comprehensive, up-to-date assessments of newly released motion pictures. The intent is to generate criticism that’s both thoughtful and accessible—you’ll find no snobby/pretentious commentary here. With some theaters charging upward of $12 for a single ticket, people should be well informed about what they’re forking over their hard earned dollars to see. Also, flowersflix.com will periodically publish my thoughts on Hollywood, trends in film, and the general direction the industry seems to be heading in. I’ll be reviewing one new movie per week, so be sure to check back regularly (and feel free to comment on the reviews).
Now let’s establish some ethos, shall we? After publishing film criticism in a somewhat informal capacity for a period of time, I decided to make the jump to web publication. I received my M.A. in English (with a focus on creative writing) from East Carolina University in 2006, and currently teach English at several Charlotte, NC area colleges, including the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College. I’ve taught first-year composition courses, as well as classes focused on academic writing and literature-based research. I’ve had poetry published in a number of journals, including Main Street Rag, Dark Sky Magazine, Relief: A Quarterly Christian Expression, Star*Line, and The Penwood Review. My short fiction has appeared in Pariah. I’ve also written reviews of local theatrical productions for the Fort Mill Times, a South Carolina newspaper.
Having the unique perspective of an English instructor who studies and discusses the structural elements of storytelling on a regular basis, I feel I’m able to add a little something to the current criticism on film that is often overlooked (and I like to do it in a manner that doesn’t require the reader to have the latest version of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary at the ready).
Without a doubt, my favorite movie is Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Empire Strikes Back is a close second, and a very recent Swedish film, Let the Right One In, has also captured my heart. And let’s not forget about Ghostbusters.
One of my favorite meals includes PB&J and dinosaur Spaghetti-O’s. I also enjoy the occasional Capri-Sun.
Scoring The Flix:
The number of stars a movie receives is representative of its overall quality. Zero stars—which is portrayed as a giant goose egg—means that a movie is completely unwatchable. Five stars, however, indicates that it’s a flowersflix.com-certified masterpiece. Here’s an example:

The above unnamed film was given 2 and 1/2 stars, which means that, overall, it is considered “Mediocre” by flowersflix.com.
